First off I am sorry if this is posted in the wrong location.
I have a NAS at home running Freenas but the lack of documentation and ease of setup is frustrating. I was wondering if Openmediavault is a better choice.

You're probably going to get a lot of very biased opnions with a question like that here.... as it's all personal opinion. I will say, as a former happy user of FreeNas... It's an absolute no brainer for me. OMV kills FreeNas at every step.
1. Read the guides section. A lot of work was put into that, and it will probably answer a lot of questions.
2. Download Virtualbox, then download the virtual machines, and give it a run through w/o installing on your hardware.
3. If you *MUST* have ZFS.. keep in mind it is not really practical yet in OMV. You might be able to consider some other options like snapraid or greyhole.. both of which are stable in OMV 1.0
When I first setup a "home made" NAS I did look at Freenas, the thing was a friend of mine was going to do the same, he is ok around a Windows machine but has no experience with Linux. I got him to try Freenas and then try OMV (0.2 I think) He struggled with Freenas but said he felt more comfortable setting up OMV.
If he can setup OMV anyone can lol (soz Sam if you see this)

Short Answer: YES!
...migrating all my freenas too
Thanks, I think you mean run OMV on my Freenas in Virtual Box?

No..
I mean download/install Virtualbox for your computer that you're using.. and then download the virtual machine OMV to test it.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openmediavault/files/vm/VirtualBox images/OMV 1.0/
Boot OMV in virtualbox.. test it, experiment with it, etc.. post any questions you may have.
Can I run this on Virtual Box on my iMac to test? The only PC I have is a Dell laptop I have Ubuntu installed on.
I would take Debian any day over BSD.

I'm not that familiar with the Mac version of Vbox.. but as long as the Mac version of Vbox can run the Intel version of the Debian.. yes, you should be able to do that no problem.
There's actually some virutal machines for Vbox that you can download, or you can download the ISO and set it up yourself if you like.. http://sourceforge.net/projects/openmediavault/files/vm/VirtualBox images/OMV 1.0/
Depending on the specs of your Ubuntu laptop.. Virtualbox also works very well on most versions of Linux, so you could run it under Ubuntu as well.

For a newb, you sure give out some portly wisdom.
hehe... can I be a supermod?
I have 26 posts so it should be a no brainer...
Is it a bird, is it a plane, No its Super-Mod
I finally had a moment to work on this.... I download Virtualbox and installed it on my Mac... I downloaded the 64 bit file and unzipped it. How to I run this in VB? There are a bunch of .vdi files, etc.... Again thanks for all of your help

Using Linux Virtual Box 4.3... (I'm assuming the Mac is the same but there might be some minor tweaks)...
Open VBox
Click the "Machine" Menu
Click Add
Navigate to the folder where you unpacked your virtual machine
Click on the OMV_kralizec_xxx.vbox file
That should import the appliance no problem, then all you have to do is click it and hit start.
I was able to get the VM running but I can't connect to it from a laptop. I have the assigned IP address and I can tell its in my home network but keep getting an error that says the server is not responding. Is there a setting I need to change in VB?
Thanks

What IP address are you getting? Is it 192.168.x,.x?
Double check this if you have not already:
Open Virtualbox
Highlight the OMV_Kralizec machine
Click Settings
Click on "Network"
Make sure your network adapter is enabled.
Set the "Attached To" to "Bridged"
Make sure "Name" is set to the current device your using on your computer (be it wireless or lan)...
