New Atom web server (C2750F) build

  • Hello All,
    I am looking for to build a new Atom server. Here are my choice of hardware. Let me know your thoughts, opinions and suggestions

    =>Mother board: Supermicro A1SAM-2750F - http://www.supermicro.com/prod…/Atom/X10/A1SAM-2750F.cfm

    =>RAM 16GB: Debating between below two options. I felt Timetec is good as its 1R. Please correct me if I am wrong
    (1) Timetec 70TT16EU1R8-8G K2 -- http://www.amazon.com/Timetec%…1&keywords=70TT16EU1R8-G8
    (or)
    (2) Kingston KVR16LE11/8KF -- http://www.amazon.com/Kingston…&keywords=KVR16LE11%2F8KF

    =>HDD: Samsung EVO 850 1TB MZ-75E1T0B/AM -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ…&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    -- willing to go for Pro instead of evo. But price diff is high

    =>PSU: Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W - ATX12V v2.3 / EPS 12V -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/….3-_-17-371-033-_-Product

    => UPS: Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD PFC (think active PFC) -- http://www.amazon.com/CyberPow…8-1&keywords=CP1000PFCLCD

    Chassis: Couldn't decide really. Priorities are Cooler, good tight air filter /w closed design, hdd sata expandability. Can you suggest some good ones. Here is what my research found:
    (1) Fractal Design R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/…BK-_-11-352-048-_-Product
    (or)
    (2) Aerocool Micro ATX -- http://www.amazon.com/AeroCool…ywords=Aerocool+Micro+ATX

    Experts, please advice. Most importantly, Am I getting any incompatible hardware

    Atom may not be fast enough to transcode. If you are just serving files, it will work well.

    Are you going to use VMs? If not, you probably don't need that much ram.

    Why the large SSD? OMV installs the OS on a separate disk from the data. So, you won't be able to use the ssd for data without tweaks.

    PSU is good. Have used that PSU many times.

    UPS is good.

    Silverstone DS380 is very nice as well. Personally, I think filters are a waste of time. They may keep dust out of your system but they become blocked off restricting air flow. It isn't hard to blow the dust out of a system every few months. I leave the side panels off my systems at home. Much better breathing for all components.

  • Thanks for quick feedback ryecoaaron. I agree on atom transcoding. it's not intended for media server stuff (at least right now)

    => Which RAM do you think best suits:
    (1) Timetec 70TT16EU1R8-8G K2 -- amazon.com/Timetec%C2%AE-PC3-1…1&keywords=70TT16EU1R8-G8

    (2) Kingston KVR16LE11/8KF -- amazon.com/Kingston-Technology…&keywords=KVR16LE11%2F8KF

    Kingston seems reliable company, but Timetec gives 1R RAM. I am really confused here

    => Can you please shed some light on why SSD will not work. What tweak do you think necessary

    • Offizieller Beitrag

    With ECC, it usually all good ram. Go with the timetec but I doubt the 1R makes much of a difference on a NAS.

    SSD will work but OMV uses the entire drive for the OS when using the OMV installer. The OMV web interface will not let you use the OS drive for anything. So, it would be all wasted space. You can repartition the SSD (one small OS partition, one large data partition) or you install Debian for your own partitioning scheme and then install OMV. If that drive fails, you lose everything though. I would get a small ssd or 2.5" drive for the OS and a large 3.5" drive for data.

    This ATOM C2750 SoC is different story, with all 8-core active (multi-thread), it's processing power can reach about 50% of a lower end Xeon E3.
    I owned the little brother, C2550, which is of same spec expect mine is 4-core only, I just tried with my OMV with Plex transcoding, it can handle 1 x H.264@1080p + 1 x H.264@2K (both were asked to transcode to 480p 1.5M or 720p 3M bitrate), so I believe C2750 can do more. (Someone in Plex forum mentioned that he can do 4 x 1080p transcoding without any issue.

    opening case from somewhere full of stuff stacking around might not be fun :P
    I stick some filter outside the case (not very good looking), in case it's full of stuff then I just peel off them and put a new one, of course I will still open the case for cleaning, but probably once a year......
    The problem for OP's mobo is, passive cooling heat sink, a layer of dust on top might cause some trouble as the CPU is already 55-60C without much loading.

    • Offizieller Beitrag

    The layer of dust on the heat sink is nowhere near the problem a blocked off filter is. Ever wonder why Dell and HP servers don't use filters? :) Even Dell desktops with large passive heatsinks on the cpu have large 10 to 20 watt case fans to accommodate for lots of dust.

    I have lots of systems in an environment with way more dust and dirt than any home environment. Filters would be plugged up in days. Every few months I take the systems outside and blow out the dust with an air compressor. Lots of dust but the systems outlive there usefulness with this method.

  • Guys,

    I will give my opinion on this since I've a similar board but mini-itx (A1SAi-2750F), I use VBox running an windows 2012 R2 Essentials server and sometimes streaming at same time from Plex and never got any problem (the processor never goes more than 40%), the only problem I had once was streaming HD to a wireless device but this was because the wireless signal was not so good.

    Regards.

    For the above, I did some research. Both support supermicro A1SAM-2750.

    => Kigston is low voltage (1.35V) compared to Timetec (1.5V). Kingston wins
    => Timetec is 1 Rank compared to Singson 2 Rank. Timetec wins
