Can I nstall GRUB in root when installing Debian/OMV package ?

  • OMV 1.10

In this thread i reported my problems with Bootit BM : I think I killed my bootloader - How installing again ?

Meanwhile w help of this forum I could repair the fault w the Boot-repair-disk. But Booit BM will not work as specified.

I now found on support of BM :

When installing Linux, it is important to make sure that you install LILO or GRUB in the root directory or superblock. Do not install LILO
or GRUB to the MBR. These programs are used to load the Linux-specific OS kernel (most other OS's include built-in support to load its kernel).

I think at my installation GRUB was installed in the MBR.

How can I manage it to move GRUB to the root at the exisising installation or at a fresh installation ?

The OMV iso installs to mbr. Use grub-install from the command line to install it elsewhere.

Can this be done on my existing installation or must I reinstall ? Can you specify the command line commands pls. As you know I'm a linux noob.

When grub-install install grub f.i. to root, then it should also install a mbr which point to grup in root. Is this the way it works ?

You can do it from running OMV. Try: grub-install /dev/sda1 to install on sda first partition. I don't know what your drive letters are or where you want to install.

  • I tried your command, but there was an error message, I then used ..../dev/sda this finished w no error.

I'll check now if it's possible to operate BM as I wish. will report.

Using /dev/sda writes grub to the mbr. What is the output of: fdisk -l

I'm actually testing w the 250GB drive. And there is sda1 the first partition where Debian is installed ? !
SSD drive is disabled in BIOS - but seen in Debian. System starts from 250GB drive

I guess you will have to force the grub-install - grub-install --force /dev/sda1

  • THX, I'll try and report !

PS : THX ryecoaaron - Now it works as I expected and I'm happy.

If I want I can partition, resize, backup, restore a.s.o. my system SSD and all other drives w this ondrive
tool in his seperate SSD partition. This is a good alternatve for a linux noob.

Maybe the coming improved plugin for systembackup is an alternative. I'll wait how I can handle it. If not I'll buy
    Booitit BM.
