My single drive silent NAS HP T5740 thin client build

  • I'm measuring now, idle about 12watt, no spin down
    now downloading with sab gives 14 watt, repairing and unpacking 15/16w.
    I will give it a few days for better viewing.

    Its running well still.
    2 times i've powered it down for cable management or something. Thing is still running. I dont know about the speeds at this moment because I dont write to much, but shall do tomorrow a backup or something. I will post here.

  • i recently got a hold of a thin client HP T5540, with the VIA chipset... I see that you chucked that model out the window... is there a performance issue?


    i've ordered a 44-pin female to female ide cable and removed 2 of the VESA plugs to screw the HDD onto the chasis, but i'm not sure if everything will work as it is, once the hardware has been set up. planning to use it as a media server though i don't know if it will support media playback and streaming as well as the T574x series (after seeing your build)


    eBay has a few of the T574x on sale for pretty cheap (~USD35) with the expansions (~USD17), but delivery charges are a bomb to Malaysia. Maybe i'll order one of these when i travel to the States for work next.


    Do you know if any 50w power supply from the other HP thin clients will work with the T5740?

  • Hi, the via chipset couldn't be used by XBMC, also freenas had problems with that.
    I dont know exactly anymore if there was an issue with OMV. Could be that it wasn't possible to disable serial ports in bios or something.
    Intel is the better chipset in all ways linux based installations, but OMV is the most compaible nas system so maybe it works very fine?

    What about temeprature?


    I have installed HDD to my Thin Client and sometimes I have high temperature (CPU - 65*C ; HDD- 49 *C).
    Maybe I should byu small fan or radiator to glue on metal top element of case.

  • I may won't work as good in 65° C, but the CPU probably will run just fine. The HDD however is near it's max working temperature so I would get a fan for it ASAP.

    Thin client cpus generally run hotter than desktop cpus because they are usually fanless. Most of them have a 100 C Tmax and can handle it.

  • I have non of these temps, sometimes the hdd reaches about 50 degrees by long writing or something.
    what type do you have, maybe hdd for cpu placed or someting?
    I just love the fanless of the thin clients, no sound the better for me.

    My Optiplex FX160 thin clients (fanless) idle at about 42 C in a 16 C environment. The cubox-i quad idles at 52 C.

    He doesn't say what thin client he is using. Looking at popular thin client CPUs, I would say is more than fine.


    Atom 280 (hp t5740) - T junction is 90 C
    AMD Geode NX (some HP thin clients) - max temp is 95 C.
    Kirkwood processor (HP thin clients I have) - T junction is 125 C.

  • People should give more info. I did not mean you Aaron. I should have said, "he". This is just like giving APM advice when people do not state the drives they are using.


    BTW, with APM my drives are supposed to go to lower rpms,

  • I tested my Thin Client (t5570e) on CPU stres -> CPU about 70*C and HDD about 50*C (it was short test, about 20 min).
    The reason for high temperature for HDD is the HDD has been screwed to top, metal plate (radiator for CPU). HDD is very close to radiator of CPU (red rectangle).


    Maybe should I glue additional radiator to the top, metal plate instead add fan - bue rectangle (i'm thinking about 40x40 mm fan, only for air flow inside - connect by internal usb) ?


    In normal work, I think taht HDD has close 50*C and CPU 65*C.
