U-NAS NSC-800 Build

    • Offizieller Beitrag

I have a haswell desktop (samsung 840 pro ssd) and ivy bridge server (8 drive software raid 5) running through two trendnet gigabit switches. The kids are watching a movie on the server and I copied a 5.5 gb file to it. 108 mb/s

No comments on the file being copied

  •

Sounds like a dirty porno or so... ^^

  • Interesting. I have a very similar Realtek NIC in my Gigabyte motherboard. Oh well, I'm not too far off your speeds. What I'd really like to do is figure out a way to test the network speed directly between my OVM NAS and my ReadyNAS Pro since both have bonded interfaces using LACP on the same switch.

  • Well, get onto the CLI on either of your NAS Systems and copy files via smb, ftp or scp from and to it.

  • Well, if you have scp setup on your ReadyNAS then it would be from your NAS:

    Code
    scp /media/UUID/big.file user@readynashostname:/path/to/eternity

scp encrypts the data and is fairly processor intensive. I doubt you will get more than 50 mb/s using it. I would use ftp or nfs for testing.

That's funny. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to use an SSH key with scp, and sure enough, I only got around 50MB/s. I thought it was because I had a big job running in the background on my ReadyNAS. I'll have to see about setting up ftp or nfs.

  • Okay... I just tested from my NAS to a local VM, as I don't have a second Linux System...

The fastest copy using scp I've ever got was 65 mb/s between two fast core i7s (i7-920 and i7-965) running linux. ssh/scp has a lot of security and connection guarantees that keep it from saturating gigabit ethernet.

  • Do you reckon a Corsair H60i would fit in there? Would probably be more silent, no?
What about the PSU, loud? Might wanna exchange my Node 304. The footprint of the NSC-800 would suit me better, but bit vary about sound level, hehe.

I'm not sure about the H60i. The Noctua is only 37mm, and it doesn't have much clearance. Interestingly, the fan and heatsink that came with my CPU probably would have fit, but I wanted something quieter than a stock Intel setup. Overall, the system is louder than it should be right now, but that's mostly due to the Noctua running at 2500RPM. That should be resolved with the replacement that's on the way. At least one of the tiny fans on the PSU appears to run all the time, and the two 120mm case fans constantly run at 1000RPM. I need more runtime with the case closed to see how it all performs thermally. I also need to add another 4TB drive. Dunno what I was thinking when I only ordered three. :)

  • Order another one. For best case writing you need 3 5 or 9 disks on a raid5.

I know the haswell celeron boxed cooler does not fit in the case.

  • Dildano, how's it going? How long did it take to receive your order of the NSC-800 from the time you placed the order? I ordered one earlier this week based on your thread and haven't received any tracking info from the company.

Your tracking number should be on the invoice they sent. It's not obvious, and it took me a couple of days to realize it. Since it shipped straight from China, it took maybe a week and a half to arrive. It wasn't as slow as I thought it would be.

  • Dildano,

I modeled my build after your parts list and I'm finding a lot of stuff don't seem to fit. Also, your pics have been removed. Is it possible to look at the pics of your build once again?
