Fire TV client issues with Emby and PlexMediaServer

  • *** I'll finish this later ***
You may experience some issues with your Emby and Plex client's on the Fire TV. Some issues are when the clients are local (i.e. on your LAN) and there are some when the clients are at a remote location. I'll go over some adjustments you can make to fix these issues.

Local Connections- Locally (LAN) you may experience problems with streaming. This seems to be primarily if you are not using hardware that can decode direct audio and will force transcoding with Emby and Plex.

Fixes in Emby client (Local Connections):
    1) When you first are in the Emby client app scroll down to "Settings".
    2) Click on "Settings".
    3) Click on "App Settings".
    4) Scroll down to "Audio Output" and click on it.
    5) Put a check mark in "Downmix to stereo" (this field used to say "Compatible") and then you can exit with the back or home button.

Fixes in Plex client (Local Connections):
    1) When you first get into the Plex client app, channels is highlighted, you want to scroll up one time and then to the right 2 times to your username. Click on it and then click on "Settings".
    2) Then scroll down one to Video. Then right click and take the checkmark off Allow Direct Stream. Then hit the back button twice to exit Settings. You might still see that Plex is transcoding in the sessions folder but it should be just transcoding the audio if you do not have hardware that supports the audio. In the Audio section of the Settings I also give it a "Large" volume boost.

Remote Connections- You may experience lag when using the clients apps for Emby and Plex remotely. Here are some adjustments to help with that.

    2) Then scroll down one to Audio. Then right click and take the checkmarks off Dolby Digital (AC3) and Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3). Then click left to go back.
    3) Then scroll down one to Video and right click. Then take the checkmarks off Allow Direct Play and Allow Direct Stream. Then hit the back button twice to exit Settings.
    4) If you are still experiencing lag you should go back into the Video section in the Settings and adjust Remote Quality downward til you no longer experience lag. Also, if your vidoes are all 480p you could just set this to 1.5 MPS 480p. With Blu-Ray start with the 20 MPS and move down step by step to the 8 MPS 1080p if needed to reduce lag. You have to test to find what setting works best for you. It is important that your OMV serving media has a good upload bandwidth. This will greatly effect how well your client app is running.

  • How to tell if Emby is transcoding or direct playing:
    1) In the Emby UI click on the 3 bars to the left of "Home" in the upper left.
    2) Then scroll down and click on "Manage Server" in the "Admin" section.
    3) Then in the right window scroll down to "Active Devices". Look for the device that currently playing video. In the lower right hand
corner of that devices informational box it will tell you if the video is direct playing or transcoding.

How to tell if Plex is transcoding or streaming:
    1) Look in this folder
    /media/UUID/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/Transcode/Sessions
    2) If plex is transcoding while playing video there will be another folder in this location that is
being used for transcoding. If there is no transcoding folder then it is streaming.
