Successfull Install results in "No Interfaces Available" error

  • Hey folks, new user here.

Just installed OMV 2.1 on a box with 4x500GB data disks and 1x40GB OS disk. Install went fine, other than an error installing GRUB. I used the alternate boot-loader included with the installer and everything proceeded smoothly from there. After the install succeeded, I rebooted to the OS drive and got to the OMV screen.

Here's the trouble: "No interfaces available" is displayed where there should be an IP for the web UI. If I run ifconfig the system shows that it has been correctly assigned to the static IP that I setup on the router. If I navigate to the static IP, I get nothing. The installer was able to auto-detect my NIC and downloaded a few updates over the web, but now that everything is installed I get this error.

Any suggestions I can run from CLI that will bring my NIC back online?

NOTE: I am running on hardware from 2011 for which Linux drivers are widely available. This is VERY unlikely to be a driver issue. Same machine installs other unnamed NAS OSes without issue.

  • Can you ping the ip nas address from another lan client?

Yes. Ping works great. I've reinstalled now twice with Grub using work-around instructions I found in the documentation. It can't be my installation because 3 out of 3 I get the same result. Ping works, IP is assigned, and the installer is able to detect and use my NIC. When everything is done, though, I end up with nothing.

  • What is the output of the following commands:

    ifconfig

    route -n

  • What is the output of the following commands:

    ifconfig

    route -n

ifconfig shows eth0 and loopback. Eth0 is assigned a local 192.168.xxx.xxx IP that I set in the router.
    Reads like this:
    inet addr: 192.168.xxx.xxx Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask: 255.255.255.0
UP BRAODCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets: 50 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets: 16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

    route-n shows:
    Destination Gateway Genmask Flags
    0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG
    192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U

First of all check that basic services are working.

    service nginx status
    service openmediavault-engined status

these show that nginx is running and omv-engined is running

  • No idea what changed. I just decided to try again, for the second time, to configure my interface using omv-firstaid and I am able to access the web UI for the first time.

I'm glad it's working for the moment, but I'm afraid to turn it off because it might hang again. If you're still willing to help troubleshoot, I would like to find the root of that problem.

    Thanks guys!

  • Just for future reference it is pointless to obfuscate IP addresses that are in private networks.

  • similar issue here.
installed 2.1_amd64 at HP microserver Gen8.
    Single HDD at Port5.
After installation at command line: To manage the system visit the openmediavault web management interface via web browser: no interface(s) available

But in ifconfig eth0 has a correct configuration.

    The webinterface is reachable too.

May be this is caused by the second, not configured network interface of the microserver?

This typically happens when you are using dhcp to get the address. The second interface shouldn't cause the problem unless you have it set for DHCP with no cable connected. Even then, I don't know if it would cause a problem.

You can change to static in the web interface or by using omv-firstaid from the command line. There really is no reason to offer network settings in the installer. If you can read the message (even if IP is not shown), you can login and get it.

Did you look at the network settings in the web interface? There is a static option.

The no interface available isn't a problem unless you don't know the ip address. Then you just have to login. Did you change your windows box to a static IP? That really won't change anything if you did. You need to change the OMV ip address. You can do that with omv-firstaid from the command line as well.

  • Thanks ryecoaaron - after I used the omv-firstaid from the command line it all started working... However, everytime I reinstall the OMV I have to always use the omv-firstaid. Why is that so?

Before I started yesterday I was trying to find some step-by-step guide for the HP N54L installation which I could follow, but I could not find it. Can you please point me to it if it exist?

    Thank you for your help
