You could try the rsync plugin.
I'm looking at rsync now. Would it be suitable for incremental backups?
Yep. It only writes changed files. If you want multiple backups (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly), try the rsnapshot plugin. It is also incremental.
Could Syncthing plugin be considered another solution?
What are its (dis-) advantages compared to rsync/rsnapshot?

I've been using the rsnapshot plugin for local incremental backups. I was looking to make it work with the Remote Shares plugin for backing up to a second machine, but I'm not sure it will.
How can I make this work?

Have you even tried it?
After mounting the remote share, you can use it like a local one. So not much difference in setting up rsnapshot.
